Aasef G. Shaikh Aasef G. Shaikh, MD, PhD, is a visionary in the field of neurology, revolutionizing the way we understand and treat complex disorders of the motor systems, gait, and balance. As the esteemed Penni and Stephen Weinberg Chair in Brain Health and Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Neurology at The University Hospitals, his impact is felt far and wide.

Leading the charge as the medical director of the Neurological Institute at The University Hospitals Samaritan Medical Center, Dr. Shaikh is at the forefront of cutting-edge advancements in neurological care. His expertise extends beyond the confines of a single institution, as he directs The National VA Parkinson’s Consortium Center—the sole VA Parkinson’s center for excellence across Ohio, Western Pennsylvania, Kentucky, and Michigan. This unique role places him in a position to make a profound difference in the lives of countless individuals affected by Parkinson’s disease.

At the heart of Dr. Shaikh’s work lies the Daroff-Dell’Osso Ocular Motility Laboratory at Cleveland VA and Case Western Reserve University. This state-of-the-art facility serves as the epicenter for his groundbreaking research, which integrates biomedical engineering concepts to unravel the mysteries of motor circuits. Driven by an unwavering dedication to discovering novel network connections, he strives to leverage their influence to artificially modulate the motor circuits, offering hope for those grappling with intractable neurological conditions.

Dr. Shaikh’s groundbreaking contributions have not gone unnoticed by his peers. He has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Alliance Founders Award, the American Neurological Association Grass Foundation Award in Neuroscience, the AAN Career Award, the Jon Stolk Award for Excellence in Movement Disorders from the AAN, and the George C. Cotzias Memorial Fellowship bestowed by The American Parkinson’s Disease Association.
